Security & Encryption

Security & Encryption

Learn about PDG Mail's security features and how to set up encryption for your emails.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

  • Access to your PDG Mail account
  • A secure location to store your encryption keys
  • Your email client configured

Transport Layer Security (TLS)

PDG Mail uses TLS 1.3 for all communications to ensure your data remains secure during transmission.

  • All communication between you and our servers is encrypted
  • All communication with external mail servers is encrypted
  • TLS 1.3 provides the highest level of security for data in transit

Zero Knowledge Encryption

PDG Mail offers at-rest zero knowledge encryption using PGP to ensure your emails remain private.

Setting Up PGP Encryption

You have two options for setting up PGP encryption:

Option 1: Generate Keys Locally

  1. Generate a key pair on your local machine
  2. Navigate to Emails → Email Account → Encryption in the PDG Mail Portal
  3. Paste your public key into the provided field
  4. The server will store your public key and use it to encrypt mail at rest

Option 2: Generate Keys in PDG Mail Portal

  1. Go to Emails → Email Account → Encryption
  2. Choose "Generate PGP Keys"
  3. Set a password or use our generator for maximum security
  4. Download your private key immediately after creation

Important: The private key will be deleted from our servers after you download it. You will be the only one with a copy. If you lose the key, you will not be able to decrypt your emails.

PGP Key Generation Screen

While a password is not required, it is recommended to set one as an additional layer of security.

We cannot decrypt or read your emails. If you lose your key, you will not be able to decrypt previous emails that were encrypted with that key.

Configuring Your Email Client

To use PGP encryption with your email client:

  1. Edit the account settings in your email client
  2. Upload your private key to the client
  3. Enter the password if you set one
  4. All emails will now be automatically decrypted with your private key

Supported clients include:

  • Thunderbird
  • Fairmail
  • Other PGP-compatible email clients
